During the 1990s, UK local authorities and public
organisations greatly benefiited from Regional Polcy grants from the EU's Structural Funds - theEuropean Regional
Development Fund (ERDF) and European Social Fund (ESF). These funds assisted economic development and training
projects within the United Kigdom. With the Enlargement of the EU in 2004 and 2007, the amount of ERDF and ESF
coming to the UK has declined dramatically and in the European Commission has stressed the importance of territorial co-operation
and transnational projects for Member States such as the United Kingdom. These Programmes include the INTERREG, URBACT,
and ESPON Programmes as well as the trannational co-operation elements of the European Social Fund.
Transnational
co-operation is the cornerstone of a whole range of EU funding programmes in Research and Development, training, education,
energy and culture programmes.
