Projects in Preparation

Zero Emission Ports North Sea (ZEM Ports NS)

Currently, European Policy Solutions is developing a Zero Emission Ports North Sea (ZEM Ports NS) with the Province of Groningen. We intend to submit this project to the North Sea INTERREG Programme.

The aim of the project is to consolidate the North Sea Region competitive advantage in the development of hydrogen and battery waterborne vessels and port ecosystems. This would be done by looking at the measures that need to be taken to ensure that ships and ferries take to the water.

This would include:

  • Changes to port infrastructure to enable fuel cell ships and ferries to operate.
  • Fuel Cell Vessel design
  • Stimulate hydrogen production, storage and use in North Sea ports
  • Undertaking the necessary procurement of the vessels
  • Regulatory requirements of fuel cell and battery vessels and equipment.
  • Trialling of fuel cell equipment in the ports such as forklifts, cranes and lifts and comparing this to electric or diesel equivalents (Life Cycle Analysis)
  • Producing a hydrogen fuel cell and battery maritime knowledge base which would include information of fuel cell ferry and vessel partners across the North Sea.
